English is widely spoken in Cyprus and fairly well represented in the local media - radio, television and print. RadioThere are several English-language radio channels, and some Greek ones with regular English-language news. However, there is no dedicated, English-language radio news service. BFBS Radio Cyprus is the British Forces Broadcasting Service, widely broadcast, with all programming in English 24 hours a day. BFBS Radio 1 Cyprus has a full programme of DJ-led music shows. BFBS Radio 2 Cyprus plays more "classic tracks". It also has programming from BBC Radio 4. You can tune in on the following frequencies:
Rock FM broadcasts 24 hours a day in Pafos on 98.5 FM and in Polis and Latchi on 106.7 FM, and on the Internet. Live presenters from 07:00 to late evening. The focus of the station is music, English rock and pop, with jazz, blues and show songs. Coast FM is an independent Limassol-based music radio station on FM and via the Internet with live streaming. Radio Pafos at 93.7 FM and 98.8 FM has an English show weekday evenings between 19:00 and 21:00 (after the Greek news). Live streaming radio available from the website. CyBC RadioCyBC (Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation) is a public broadcaster with four radio channels (called First, Second, Third, Fourth). CyBC Second provides some English-language programs. CyBC Second is also available:
Radio on the InternetMany international radio stations are available streamed live on the Internet. A player is necessary to listen, usually RealPlayer (Real Player Basic, the free version, is hidden away on the real.com website, but it does exist) or Windows Media Player.
Voice of America programming, which includes music, news and cultural shows, is available online.
Local Cyprus Internet NewsLintv (Local Internet News) Paphos is the first dedicated Internet news station in Cyprus with news from Paphos. Broadcasts have a focus on local politics, the arts, leisure, business and the environment. Also included are weather forecasts, foreign exchange updates and events listings for Paphos. The news bulletin is available from Monday to Friday from 19:30 (and online 24 hours a day).
TelevisionThere is no TV licence fee in Cyprus. The public broadcasting service is financed with a tax included in electricity bills from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. ANT1 Antenna 1 is a commercial broadcaster from Greece on channels 23, 24, 26, 35, 37, 41, 42, 48, 60, 63, 65 and 67. BRT (Bayrak Radio Television Corporation) broadcasts some older movies and local news in English from Turkey. Those living near the border in the northern part of the island may be able to receive a signal. BRT also streams programming online. CyBC (Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation), the public broadcasting service, has two television channels one of which does provide some English programming.
LTV (Lumiere Television) and sister channel Alfa TV (which provides sport and children's programming) are national terrestrial pay channels available by subscription. miVision is a service provided by the Cyprus telephone company CYTA whereby customers receive TV signals via a regular telephone landline. These are then converted through a set-top box (provided by CYTA) into signals that can be transmitted through analogue and digital TVs. The service also includes optional video on demand. OmegaTV Paphos: Broadcasts television programs to the Paphos district. Programming includes: Greek and English news, weather, documentaries, sports, films, cartoons, politics, local interest and music.
Pafos TV is a local TV station. Mostly Greek-language programming, it includes news in English (local, national and international) on Monday to Friday at approximately 20:30 and 23:15. Most evenings, one or two English-language films are screened. Satellite TVMega Channel and Sigma TV are both nationwide commercial broadcasters offering movies, news, serials, comedies, talk shows and sports. Sigma TV offers live TV streaming from the website (best viewed with broadband). Sigma TV caters specifically to the younger, urban audience in the 18 to 45 age group and broadcasts many locally produced programmes.
